The dream has ended for the Sol as they fall in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup

SANTA ROSA, CA (June 17, 2009) -- The Sonoma County Sol's US Open Cup dreams were cut short on Tuesday night as they lost 3-0 at home to Portland Timbers of USL-1. The Sol were attempting to become only the third USASA club to advance to the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, but were unable to do so against a relentless Portland Timbers side. A goal from George Josten and two from Mandjou Keita paved the way for the Timbers into the Third Round, where they will face rivals Seattle Sounders.

The loss is the first for the Sol in 2009, having amassed a 12-0-2 record in all competitions prior to this defeat. There were doubts about the Timber's past record in the Open Cup, having only 3 victories in the previous 8 years in Open Cup play, and having been defeated by a USASA team in 2008 (Hollywood United).

The Sol were on the defensive early, and a goal from George Josten in the 7th minute would put the NPSL side down 1-0 and relinquish all doubt about the Timber's past mistakes. The rest of the first half was a tough go for the Sol, as Portland continued to pressure, but were unable to convert for a second before the half.

The second half was more of the same as the Sol continued to defend. However, Portland still could not convert, and the Sol began the attack into the last 20 minutes of the match. As the Sol pressed on, they were unable to convert on several chances, as Steve Cronin kept the clean sheet for the Timbers.

With the Sol pressing to equalize in the dying minutes of the second half, Mandjou Keita was able to find the back of the net twice in the last ten minutes of play, including one in extra time to seal the victory for the Timbers.

Portland Timbers will now host Seattle Sounders of the MLS in the third round on Wednesday, July 1 at PGE Park at 7 p.m.
